Massaranduba (Manilkara SPD) Also known as Balata. Bolletrie & Maparaluba Description: Grown in South America, Central America and the West Indies it can
reach a height of 40 to 45 metres with a diameter of 0.8 to 1.5 metres. Regular supplies are available in Square Edged form but the specification can be somewhat
limited. In many ways its properties and uses are similar to Greenheart and Ekki. It has dark red brown slightly purplish heartwood, which turns to dark reddish
brown on exposure with a distinct pale pink brown sapwood. It is straight grained and has a fine texture. Massaranduba is an extremely strong and durable timber.
It is used in heavy construction and marine work also ideal for flooring and decking. Due to the timbers straight grain and fine texture it is possible to produce a
fine finish which has allowed it to be also used for tool handles and furniture components. Nett weight (kg/m3) - 1050.
Durability - Good resistance to termites and decay durable to very durable. Working Qualities - Despite its hardness it machines and finishes to a very smooth
surface. Also polishes well. Nailing and screwing - Requires pre-boring. Treatment - Like most very dense timbers it is difficult to impregnate with liquids. This
also applies to gluing were care should be taken, due to the timbers resistance to absorption of moisture. Strength - Very strong and similar to Ekki and
Greenheart. - Dutch strength Class D 60. Certification - Can be supplied with FSC Certification.
