Roll over image with cursor Ipi (Tabebuia serratifolia) Also known as Ironwood, Yellow Poui, Wassiba and Groenhart. Ipe is found in the Caribbean region, South America, Guyana and Brazil.  Description: The heartwood is yellowish green when initially cut but turns to a light to dark olive brown with light and dark streaks. Pores in the heartwood which appear as small yellow dots are filled with a yellowish powder and appear on the longitudinal surfaces as yellow lines. This powder has the appearance of sulphur but turns deep red in alkaline solutions. It has a distinct greyish white band of sapwood. This group of timbers are known for their great strength, durability and high resistance to insects and decay, this makes them ideal for marine work, bridges and decking. It is with this latter item that Ipe has been used in considerable quantities and current imports are showing a large proportion of sizes are being shipped mainly for decking demand. Nett Weight. (kg/m3) 960 - 1200.   Durability: very durable. Working Qualities: Ipe is moderately difficult to work with hand tools and has a blunting effect on cutting edges. Care should be taken with sawing as fine dust packs between the saw blade and the cut surface, this can be somewhat overcome by using a fairly wide tooth pitched saw blade. Machining again needs care in order to achieve a good finish but a cutting angle of at least 15 degrees is recommended to eliminate chipping of quarter sawn stock. Due to the hardness of the timber pre-boring is required before screwing or nailing to prevent splitting and bending of nails. Ipe stains and polishes well. Strength: very hard, tough and strong and compares favourably with Greenheart and Ekki. Sustainability: available with FSC Certification.  Meerdink (UK) Ltd, 10 Roman Way, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, LN9 6PL For overseas enquiries Tel/fax: + 44 (0) 1507 527157
