Roll over image with cursorCumaru (Dipterrix adarata) Also known as Tonka wood & Cayenne Description: Grown in Brazil, Surinam, Guyana and other parts of South America the tree has a clear, straight trunk that grows to 30 to 50 metres in height with a diameter up to 1.20 metres, Its qualities are comparable to Greenhart and Ekki and although regular supplies are available in Square Edged form section, sizes are often limited for prompt requirements. The timber is attractive looking with heartwood that is brown yellow to reddish brown with dark veins. The sapwood is a distinct yellowish white. It has a medium texture with sometimes a strong interlocked grain. Cumaru is extremely durable and very strong which with its stability makes it a very suitable timber for a range of outdoor applications such as marine and heavy construction, flooring, decking and cladding. The timber is Durability Class 1 - Very durable, which gives it a very good resistance to decay and termites. Nett Weight (kg/m3) - 1060-1200 Working Qualities - a good finish can be achieved but the interlocked grain can present some problems at times. Nailing and screwing - requires pre-boring Treatment - difficult to impregnate is not regarded as a timber that requires treatment. Strength - very strong similar to Ekki and Greenheart.
